I am recently back from a holiday in Gran Canaria and do most streets every 200-300 metres there a huge set of weighing scales chained to the wall. Does anyone know why this is? Are the Spanish obsessed with weighing themselves? Anyone else seen this strange thing anywhere else in the country
Like you I am just back from Gran Canaria and noticed this as well. I was trying to think why - weigh your cases before you get to the airport was one of the daft ideas I came up with! Did you ever see anyone use them, I didn't! Guess its just another money making racket!
No idea. Of course we ( Spanish people ), are not obsessed with our weight, I have not seen this anywhere in Spain!
Whilst I don't know the reason for this, it's very handy nowadays with the strict excess baggage charges operated by airlines. From my own experience in mainland Spain, the last 3 resort hotels I have stayed in had weighing scales, in reception, on which to check your baggage weight. Pretty considerate of the Spanish hosts, in my opinion.
