  • As we have just 9 days , we cannot make it to other cities of Spain- We will be in Barcelona, and I feel that towns about an hour or 2 away from Barcelona by tourist buses would be better as we would spend less time traveling on road and be able to enjoy the near by places-
Any suggestions? have checked up websites but not sure which would be good- Some scenic places, quaint-A quick response will be greatly appreciated- Thanks

  • We spent about ten days in Barcelona...here's what we did, and what we had to skip:

We went to Tarragona...really neat Roman ruins, there, pretty intact fortification wall, that you can tour the ramparts of...and an excellent amphitheater with a view of the Sea which is TO DIE FOR!!! Really nice town!

Girona...quaint little town on the North of the city...we went primarily to tour the Jewish Call (quarter) but the 500 year old arcade and just the old city were very nice!

Figueres...Dalí house and museum was all we did, there. Also, pretty spectacular!

Mont Serrat...monastery of great historical significance, right outside of the city.

We didn't get to wine country, or the cavas (champagne caves/wineries) or Cadaqués, a town where all the impressionists spent time and painted...supposed to be really pretty and the light is interesting.

Lloret del Mar is supposed to be great, and there's a castle/Parador, I think it's in Lloret, also.

All of that is about an hour away from Barça...Also, a couple of amusement parks/Water parks if it's that season.

You are wise to concentrate on one area if you don't have more than about 10 days.

    Have fun!

  • Hi, Snowbird. I think I mentioned a couple of these places before, but Cadaques might be the prettiest place on the coast. Closer with nice beaches is Sitges, though I think you can see the town in under a day. Tarragona has a lot of Roman ruins (and again nice beaches). Figueras is a nice town with the Dali museum. Montserrat has an old monastery with beautiful views, and some good hiking if you're up for that. Aside from Cadaques, you can see the others in a day and be back to Barcelona by nightfall.

I never got to Girona. You might check with SOC JO about that and other ideas. I'm pretty sure she's Catalan.

If you you can stretch the distance a little, Valencia is a relatively pleasant 3-hour train ride from Barcelona and well worth up to 3 days. Drop me a line if you want more information on Valencia.
