Im going to be leaving for Cozumel in a couple days, i was wondering if i should take all the money i plan on spending in cash/travel checks or take cash and take my credit/debit cards also? i seen that stores charge to use cards, are the ATMs safe and what type of charge will you get if you do use an ATM?
No need to take more than one or two hundred, just what you will spend on meals and tips and services before you get there. Bring your ATM and a credit card or two and get a few hundred dollars in pesos each time you need walking around money. I expect the hotels and larger stores take credit cards, but many small shops and restaurants don't so you need some cash. Very few places take travelers checks.
As for ATM and credit cards, call you bank and tell them when and where you will be in Mexico so they can monitor but not block your charges. ATMs give pesos. Cozumel is in Mexico and that is the currency. The exchange rate is roughly ten pesos to a dollar.
I prefer to use the ATMs that swipe rather than ingest the card. Banamex usually has the swipe ATMs and sometimes HSBC. The charges vary but are usually a buck or two, same as in the states.
You can go to a BANK ATM and pull out pesos. It's the cheapest way to go.
While there, avoid Cancun ... and don't drink the water!

Take some cash ( about $1,000 usd) and change it for mexican pesos. The rest of your expenses can be with your credit cards, and in case you need more cash you will find a lot of ATMs which are safe and will charge you very little.
I tell people to Western union themselves the $$$ before you depart.
Will be given to you at any Westaern union at the current exchange rate ion Pesos.
May want to do 1 for say $500 dollars and another 2 or 3 at say $200 dollars. That way your not loaded down with pesos to convert back when you come home.
