Hi everyone! My wife and I have been accepted on 12 month working visas and want to know what Christchurch is like? Could people who work/ live there let me know? We're looking for a city that is laid back, with a good nightlife and interesting things to do. Is Christchurch all of the above?
It's all of the above, yes.
But it's also kinda dangerous.
Christchurch is riddled with racism, and in general is not very attractive. It's very very flat in most places so if you're from a place with hills or mountains you might get quite homesick.
Depends which suburb you're in really.. on the outskirts it's a bit nicer.

I've lived in Christchurch my whole life (14 years), and I wouldn't go anywhere else in the world.
It's fantastic here, and you can drink the tap water without wanting to throw it back up.
It is great up on the port hills at night, looking down at all the lights. And there's many interesting things to do you just have to be creative. It is quite a laid back place also. You'll love it here. And won't regret coming. Just remember to take cameras. :)

Yes,Yes and Yes!! Christchurch is a fantastic city to go to/live in.I live in the North Island and have been to CHCH a few times.Compared to the North Island it is full of White and Asian People and is Very Flat.The night life is great and New Zealanders are all laid back-maybe not as much as South Americans but much better than Germans etc! No offense if you're German.CHCH is a safe city and has a lot to do-especially in winter time.
Christchurch is a very nice city, and extremely pretty in the winter. there are a lot of interesting attractions like the cathedral, gondola, jet boating art gallery, new brighton beach and so much more. it's also pretty close to the ski fields so you can head off to mount hutt or porters on the weekend!

as for nightlife, it is reasonably good, obviously not as good as bigger cities and crime/gangs are a bit of a problem, but if you go to the right areas, you are sure to have a good time

Yes! Christchurch is awesome!
I fully recommend going into the central city espicially on weekends as that is when the city is most vibrant. Sol Square would be a really good place to go at night.
Just as long as you don't think that because it is a small city it is safe then you will be fine and have lots of fun. Be as safe as you are in your home country. I have met people who consider Christchurch a playground and that is very unwise.
