  • Currently in jo-burg. want to get away from it all. i have 3 kids ages 3,7,11. husband was recently killed in a car jacking, our house has been robbed 5 times this year. my 11 year old was stabbed in the arm while walking home ffrom school. our neighbours were both murdered in cold blooded kiling.

we think auckland would be a little better. whats a good safe area for kids with good schools?

  • wow, sorry to hear about all that.

new zealand is a really safe place.
    i would recommend places like:
misson bay, glendowie, meadowbank, remuera etc. they are really friendly and nice places - and good schools too.
try and stay away from places like manurewa and otara (and pretty much all of south auckland) as that is where most of the crime in auckland takes place...
and yes, in auckland you can drive with your doors unlocked, and you can certainly have your windows down!

auckland is a great place and im sure you will be very happy here :)

  • hi

I'm from Joburg as well and have been living in Auckland for about 3 years now, also moved here because of crime and stuff but i wasn't as unlucky as you , sorry about your family.

In Auckland Mission Bay and everything around like kohimarama, Orakei, Glendowie, Remuera are very good areas but they are a bit expensive (ocean view and city nearby).
North Shore is great lots if places with ocean views big houses and not too expensive (problems:the bridge between North Shore and Auckland City has traffic in the morning and in the evening as most work is across the bridge).
Mt Wellington, Green lane,Ellerslie and around are quiet good big houses and average in price.

All these areas are close to the city the other areas like Pukaranga, Botany Down are further away from the city but also have big houses and are relatively cheat.

Don't leave in South Auckland, it's a poor area and that's where most of the crime happens.
The crime i think in new zealand is about 1/1000 compared to south Africa.
It's very safe in Auckland, when you drive you can leave your car open and your windows.

What i found so interesting in new zealand in general is that the houses don't have big fences only little ones for decoration (just that can tell you a lot about crime in the city).

Schools are good in all the areas i've mentioned and each area has a playground for kids.

    Hope you get here alright

  • Hi Jenny, I'm a South African who lived in NZ for over 4 years. Crime is nothing like Jhb but it does not mean that you can be overly relaxed here, Auckland's crime is on the increase. I hope that you have friends or family here that can help you get to know the city? Have you ever considered living in any of the smaller towns like Hamilton, Tauranga, Taupo? No matter, youĂll be coming to a much better country with real friendly people. There's no fencing or walls around most properties, no burglar-bars on the windows and doors, no alarms, no security checks, etc., and no, you don't have to drive around with your car doors locked.

  • I'm not from Auckland..but from the Mighty Waikato lol....I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your life in SA and hope you can get yourself to NZ and make a new life for yourself...

There have been some crimes in South Auckland over this past week...but Auckland is still a good place to live barring the traffic.....if you want to look at other places cities like Hamilton are a wee bit cheaper than Auckland....

    Good luck to you

  • I would advise anyone that intends to visit New Zealand to first log onto the local yahoo news website, www.yahoo.co.nz to witness the horror of rapes, murders and violent bashings and assaults that are occurring in this country on a daily basis. Just monitor the site for a few days to witness the frequency of crime.

New Zealand has turned into a very dark and dangerous country with many areas of Auckland too dangerous to visit. If coming to New Zealand do not visit areas of Auckland like Mangere, Papatoetoe, Otara, Manurewa, Wiri, Middlemore, Otahuhu, East Tamaki, Takanini, Westfield, Onehunga, Kelston, Penrose, Manukau, Homai and Drury to name a few.

Areas of Auckland central city are also very dangerous, especially at night. This has horrific crime and violence. If visiting be very very careful, get into a ⠜Corporate Cab⠝ that is driven by a New Zealander, if you don⠙t want to be driven 10 times further than you need to go and get ripped off. Preferably get picked up by friends and/or a reputable international tourist company shuttle/bus.

Unless you are staying and travelling with friends familiar with the ⠜dark spots⠝ of this country be very careful.

    An honest and concerned Kiwi

  • Like the first two said:
    North shore, Devonport,Takapuna,

Just don't move to the South Side of Auckland.
You don't need to lock you car doors while driving around Auckland

  • Sorry to hear. Auckland will be better.

The best areas are around North Shore; Takapuna, Chatswood, Birkenhead and Devonport.

Good schools are Chelsea Primary (has a kindergarten) Takapuna Primary. Private schools; Kristin.

I hope you find a happier life in Auckland

  • The North Shore. Takapuna, Devonport, Torbay, Brown's Bay, etc There are plenty of ex pat South Africans living there. The North Shore has great beaches, great shopping and great schools. You can drive around with your car door unlocked and the windows down. There is crime, but not as bad as in SA. If you ever seen a Super 14 rugby match between the Blues and a team from SA, and it is being played in Albany (on the North Shore), it is often said who has the more crowd support.

You want to miss South Auckland. That place is bad.
