Madrid Nightlife & Must see places?

  • I am studying abroad in Madrid Spain for 3 months. My school is very small so there arent very many people. I dont have done most typical tourist places during the day but I have yet to experience the "night life" everyone is talking about. I would like to know what the most recommended clubs are. I dont really like Disco, which seems to be the only night clubs I can find. ANY suggestions?! Tips? ANYTHING!? Thanks. I am a Female in my early 20's if that helps :)

  • If you are into bars with music I would really recommend the area Sol. When you are close to Plza. Santa Ana you can find many bars which will play good international music. I would recommend Occonels and Dubliners. They are Irish bars and you'll meet many new people.

    Hope it helps

  • Hey yeah I just came back from Madrid too for 2.5 months, hope you're enjoying it as I did!

Well, I went to "Joy" which is the converted theatre club which was really good (open till like 5am or something), if you're in Sol, walk down towards Opera and the Royal Palace (i.e. not the street with McDonalds and goes onto Plaza Mayor but theres one street parralel to that), and if you walk down it for a few minutes you'll see it on the left (next to the alleyway where there's the really good Churro chocolateria if you know it oh, and the church) but anyway, the club is good, it's open late, good lots of music (mostly American/English with some Spanish), pulls in lots of people and it's a good night with a big dancefloor, but the drinks are expensive!! Entry is 10 euros I think

Secondly, the club "Kapital" is world renouned, I unfortunately couldn't go, but apparently it has 7 floors of good different styles of music, it costs around 15 euros to get in, and like Joy, you'll need to drink a bit before hand coz the drinks are expensive. That's near Atocha metro.

The main bar/club areas are Alonso Martinez area, there's a metro stop there (it's near Plaza De Colon)..apparently! I've not been there though. Also there was Plaza Santa Ana and Calle Huertas which is full of bars and little clubs which are decent clubs, cheap, and play mainly Spanish music with some American/English...would really recommend that

However, the best thing if you don't know a lot about Madrid nightlife is the group bar crawl! Basically, every single night, this guy stands next to the statue of the bear with the strawberry tree in Sol at 10.30 and a load of random people (mainly tourists) meet up, pay 10 euros, and basically u get a bar crawl tour guide of different bars, and you get drinks vouchers and a free drink with your 10 euros that you part with! (Though don't get the Sangria, they take advantage that you're foreign and they'll water it down so it tastes like watery ribena)..so I would recommend that for sure, be warned you get given nasty stuff though haha (i.e. cheap rum!)....and also, whilst you're in the area there at 10.30, a few people with leaflets (including money off vouchers for Kapital) come round and try to get you to go to other clubs as they know there'll be people waiting for the bar crawl tour!

Remember to take ID, no matter your age, they ID!

I forgot to mention, the music they play is usually dance music. Apparently thursday nights are 'techno nights', with friday and saturday being a mix. Clubs usually open late around 11/12am and don't get that busy until 12.30/1am, but they close a lot later. Chueca (on line 5 of metro) is also the gay district which is apparently good for clubbing but I didn't go unfortunately!

Enjoy it, writing all that I miss it now haha!!

  • Grab a friend and go have tapas at that little strip just below the Plaza Mayor...it's actually on the outside wall. I think it's off C/Toledo.

If you want to meet some really good people, go to the Plaza de la Puerta Cerrada (same side of the Plaza, but down hill about ten mins walk.) and find a little locals restaurant called El Rey del Pimiento. The owner's daughter is a friend of mine, but the other five kids still live in Madrid. Really good folks. Just go become regulars there. They'll probably take you in.

Also, on a totally different level, I hear the transvestite and gay clubs are great fun! (I have never done, but they seem like a really interesting place to go check out! I've seen photos. Can't remember the name of the one I saw, but you should check it out, anyway),

Make sure, if they don't take you there, to grab a friend, or even go on your own, and get to Segovia, Toledo, Sevilla, and Granada. Barcelona is really cool, too.
