  • I know that there is no good use for iceberg lettuce, but isn't there some good use for the broadleaf weed Creeping Charlie, aka "ground ivy"?

  • Hello there First we all need to take time out and "smell the roses" as it were. But in this case we'll be scrunched up on our knees smelling around tree stumps and flower garden edges hot on the trail of the elusive yet somehow ever present ground ivy, oft called "Creeping Charley," even more oft called assorted other names. It really is a lovely little plant as you can see in these photos at: http://www.all-creatures.org/picb/wfshl-groundivy.html - Wild Flowers of Sleepy Hollow Lake And it is still on the market as an ornamental ground cover which seems to be its main commercial use. This is the yellow flower version. http://www.natsnursery.com/gc/charley.htm - From website of N.A.T.S Nursery Ltd. Since many of us are going to be stuck with it, like it or not, we might as well enjoy it as well as rip it out of the yard. Sort of like a when you have lemons, do the lemonade thingy. They are great foliage plants in hanging baskets and can give "drops" several feet in length. When used as a green texture addition to flowering plants, they are wonderful, and in a basket all alone put on a great show. They are designated as a hanging basket plant on this list from Texas A&M University: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/plantanswers/publications/houseplant/baskets.html Call it a "control issue." Call it a "wanting to be in charge" anxiety complex. Call it what you want. But as long as I'm in the battle against this amazingly aggressive, sometimes I suspect man eating, we have some neighborhood pets missing, clingy, walks on its tip toes across the ground to plant a new clump 10 feet away from where you just utterly demolished it the day before, type garden monster, I just like to know I have a couple of them nicely trained and doing what I want them to. It is a feeling of Power. Cheers digsalot

  • Here is an additional bit of information. It would seem ground ivy even has medicinal uses. http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/i/ivygro16.html - a good webpage covering many aspects of ground ivy. Happy gardening digs
