  • I would like to obtain information regarding cyclones which have hit the island of Madagascar since 1985. The number of cyclones (total), along with the name, dates and intensity of individual cyclones are the minimum info needed. Point of contact, path and other info (estimated damage, casualites, etc) would be useful.

  • I have found information on all cyclones that have hit Madagascar since 1985, but I wanted to make sure that it would meet your needs before I posted an answer. The information includes the name, dates, and intensity of individual cyclones -- but does not state the exact date that a cyclone hit Madagascar or the exact intensity at the time it hit, but rather the dates that the cyclone existed and the cyclone's maximum intensity during its existence. The information also includes the point of contact and path, though not estimated damage and casualties. Should I post this information as an answer?

  • Hello. Thanks for contacting me for clarification. It sounds ot me like the information you have would be fine, particularly if it is possible to find links so that i can dig further. I need to be assured of the quality of the source, because I want to ensure that all cyclones are accounted for properly. With names and dates, I should be able to check news resources etc. for casualties (though as you may have noticed, news coverage of Madagascar is poor). Please do post. Also, I know of some cyclones that have hit Madagascar multiple times - begin in Indian ocean, cross the island, regain strength int eh Mazabique channel and hit from teh west again. If there is a way to denote these - perhaps with that trajectory data, I woudl surely appreciate it. Many thanks once again for contacting me. Please od not hesitate to ask if you have further concerns or questions. Cheers, gottaknow :)

  • Hello gottaknow, The Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Center (Joint Typhoon Warning Center) has published a series called the "Annual Tropical Cyclone Report". You can access these reports by using the following page: Index of /jtwc/atcr The Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Center (Joint Typhoon Warning Center) http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/jtwc/atcr/ First, click on the year that you want. Then, for the years 1985 to 1996, click on "pdf", and on the next page, click on "chapter4.pdf"; this chapter contains information on South Indian Ocean cyclones. For the years 1997 to 2002, click on the year that you want, then on "Table of Contents", and finally on the chapter title for South Pacific and South Indian Ocean tropical cyclones, navigating on the resulting page by clicking the arrows or on items in the left column. On these pages, you will find the name, dates (periods of warning), maximum surface winds, path, and point of contact for all cyclones that hit Madagascar, as well as all other cyclones in the South Indian Ocean and South Pacific. I figure that you might want to compile the information from these pages yourself, since some of the cyclones (or the eyes thereof) do not pass over Madagascar, but do pass very close, so that you might consider such cyclones to have "hit" Madagascar, while others might not. If you need any assistance with obtaining information about a particular year or cyclone, please let me know. Two other pages that have information on cyclones that have hit Madagascar in the past several years are: "Tropical Storms, Worldwide" [under "Storm Data Archives"] Hawai'i Solar Astronomy [Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai'i] http://www.solar.ifa.hawaii.edu/Tropical/ "Tropical Cyclones" [under "Previous Seasons and Historical Data"] Australia Severe Weather http://australiasevereweather.com/cyclones/ I hope that this information is helpful. - justaskscott I used these search terms in various combinations on Google: cyclones cyclone hurricanes hurricane typhoons typhoons madagascar "indian ocean" "south indian ocean" "storm tracks" "storm track"

  • Hello justaskscott. Thanks for posting a reply so quickly! The site appears to have the info needed - along with hundreds (if not thousands) of pages pertaining to other years and locations. The focus of my question was quite specific, and to feel more "answered" than "guided" it will be useful to see the info about Madagascar for 1985-2002 isolated from the mountain of data at the site as specified in the original question, please. I think the following format would be the easiest: Year: Total # name dates intensity (for each) Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Cheers, gottaknow

  • I will provide this information for the cyclones whose paths cross onto Madagascar on the maps. I have to do some other errands now, but I should be able to do it this evening (Google Answers time).

  • My apologies; I am unable to do the proper amount of work on my clarification this evening. I hope you won't mind if I do it tomorrow.
